– April 2012 –
Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of our newsletter. Things are bustling in the Wolf Lair, and we've fully shaken the winter doldrums. We're looking forward to a three day weekend in just over a month, as well as all the gaming that comes with it, and hope you are too! In the meantime, we're excited to share the following updates with you:
We have successfully concluded beta testing Hero Lab for the Mac! We want to thank everyone who helped us prepare for this significant release. We can hear the happy cries of "No more rebooting into Windows" from here.
Hero Lab for the Mac was officially released on April 20th! Anyone who is interested can move their existing license to a Mac by downloading the Mac version from our web site. Simply input your existing license number into the Mac version, and you'll be good to go! (You can read more about moving Hero Lab from a PC to a Mac on our licensing page.)
Additionally, Hero Lab for the Pathfinder Beginner Box is now also available for the Mac! If you're a mac user who's been looking forward to trying out the Beginner Box, you can find it on our downloads page also.
Our attention is now solidly on finalizing Army Builder for the Mac. As we've shared in the past, our cycle for releasing Army Builder for the Mac has hugely benefited from all the work we've done on Hero Lab, and the cycle will be only a matter of weeks. We're expecting to launch the beta version of Army Builder for the Mac before the middle of May. We already have a full team of testers standing by, so we aren't accepting further applications at this time. We may open the beta to a wider audience during testing, so watch our web site, Facebook and Twitter for announcements, as well as status updates.
Gen Con 2012, held August 16-19, is rapidly approaching! This year at Gen Con, we're going to be doing more than we ever have, and we're looking for volunteers who can help us accomplish all our goals. We're seeking experienced users of Hero Lab, with a preference toward Shadowrun and/or Pathfinder experience. You'll be spreading the good word by demoing Hero Lab to Gen Con attendees. If you're interested, check out these details, including the benefits of volunteering. We'll be making our selections at the start of June, so please voice your interest before the end of May.
Lone Wolf Development is seeking another veteran C# developer for our team in Silicon Valley. The right candidate will have a direct and immediate impact on new product development that will help shape an industry. In fact, you'll play a pivotal role in bringing a brand new product from concept to commercial release!
We're seeking a self-motivated individual with the drive and determination to make a difference. If you're a resourceful, quick learner, with a knack for creative problem solving and the desire to craft quality software, we want to talk to you. You'll be joining the team that has created multiple award-winning products for tabletop games and helping to transform the gaming industry. If this sounds like a great fit for you, review the position specifics on our website and send us your resume right away.
If you haven't already, better start looking in the closet for those water wings, because the primary focus for Pathfinder this month involves a lot of water. We're happy to announce that Hero Lab now supports the newest Pathfinder Campaign Setting, "Isles of the Shackles". Treacherous seas, cannibalistic natives, buried treasure, undead denizens, and Pirates! What's not to love?
"Isles of the Shackles" will be the last book in our Campaign Setting #7 add-on package. If you've already purchased this package, you'll receive the new material when you download this month's Pathfinder update. If you haven't purchased it yet, now's the time. It's only $4.99, and it's got Pirates! There's other cool stuff in this package, including "Lands of the Linnorm Kings", "Book of the Damned 3: Horsemen of the Apocalypse", "Dragon Empires Gazetter", "Mythical Monsters Revisited", and "Distant Worlds".
In addition to the new Campaign Setting, we've also released the first of the new Skull & Shackles Adventure Paths, "The Wormwood Mutiny", as well as the Skull & Shackles Player Guide - both FREE. This gives you everything you need to begin adventuring in the untamed island chain known as the Shackles. Download the update today, and begin your newest adventure!
This month we also released the Golarion #3 Player Companion package, kicking off with content from "Blood of Fiends"! If you have the courage to run a tiefling, those tainted products of mortal and fiendish blood, or even if you're looking to make some tiefling NPCs more robust, this is the package for you. Variant abilities, new skills and feats, even some new traits are available to help you customize your fiendish characters. This add-on is available for $4.99, and will include at least one more book, possibly two, depending upon the size of the upcoming Player Companions. If you buy Golarion #3 before we've finalized the remaining books, they'll be added to your license as a free update when they become available.
This month, we've released some new material for all the 'runners in the audience. The "Runner's Companion" package is now available for $9.99! This initial release covers everything except the alternate character creation rules and character concepts, which will be added in May. If you buy "Runner's Companion" now, you'll receive a free update with the alternate character creation rules and character concepts when we release them.
Within the next week, Drakes, Infected and Sapient Critters from the Alternate Character Concepts chapter will be released as an update for everyone who has purchased the Runner's Companion add-on. The Shapeshifters, AIs and Free Spirit characters will be added soon.
Remember, we're offering a 30% discount on the Shadowrun Basic Suite bundle; it includes "Runner's Companion", "Arsenal", "Augmentation", and "Street Magic", with "Unwired" on the way. You can purchase the Basic Suite bundle of these five add-ons for only $34.99! For users who purchase the Basic Suite bundle prior to the completion of all five supplement packages, the additional packages will be added to your license as a free update when they become available.
Our current expectation for introducing the last book in the Basic Suite bundle, "Unwired", is the first half of May. However, for anyone who purchases the Basic Suite bundle before then, you'll find we've added the new qualities contained in "Unwired" already so you can take advantage of them.
We also released material to support "Safe Houses", and it's now part of our Shadowrun PDF Bundle #2. If you've already purchased this PDF bundle, the new content will be available once you download the update. If you haven't yet picked it up, now might be the time to do so. This add-on includes not only "Safe Houses", but also includes material from other "Runner's Black Book" chapters - air vehicles from "Unfriendly Skies", nautical vessels from "Deadly Waves", and weapons from "Gun Heaven". Unleash the mayhem from these PDFs for only $9.99. We'll also be including the content from one final PDF, still to be determined, to this add-on in the future. (Anyone purchasing the PDF bundle before the final PDF is added will receive the final content as a free update.)
This month, we'd also like to say a special "thank you" to Bryan Wallbridge, one of the fine individuals that helps us beta test our Shadowrun releases. Bryan created portfolios of contacts for us to distribute to everyone for free! They'll be included in the next update.
In addition, that update for Shadowrun in early May will also round out a couple of our other offerings. If you've purchased the Augmentation add-on, either separately or as part of the bundle, Biodrones will be in the next update! For all you GMs out there, you'll also be able to start using the critters from the "20th Anniversary Edition Rulebook" as NPCs within Hero Lab.
Next month, we'll detail even more material for Shadowrun that's in the works!
Our Powered By Hero Lab program continues to gain momentum, and over a dozen publishers have now released Hero Lab data files with their products. This month, we're happy to highlight the following new materials for you:
One of the things we'd like to do to help our users is provide more video-based materials, especially on the topics of how to use the Hero Lab Editor to create custom content and how to use the Authoring Kit to create your own material. Of course, our grand plans suffer from one tragic flaw—we have virtually no experience in using video editing tools to pull everything together into a useful and informative piece.
We're looking for someone to help us put together some well-edited videos to demonstrate Hero Lab's capabilities, help people get started using the editor, and more. If you have this experience, we'd love to hear from you!
Send us an e-mail if you're interested, experienced with video editing, and able to help us out. Please include some links to some of your videos, so we can see some samples of your finished work.
Last month, we highlighted a number of ways you can customize your Army Builder output. If you missed our last issue, you can find information here. This month, we're going to continue describing some additional options you have for customizing your roster output. As we did before, we'll be starting from the Print Preview window of Army Builder.
When you have the Print Preview window open, you'll see a button on the top of the window which looks like a bulleted list. If you hover over the button, you'll see that it allows you to view advanced output options. Click on that button to open the Advanced Output Settings form.
By simply checking or unchecking each box, you'll change the contents of your roster print-out. If you make changes to the Advanced Output Settings, those changes will apply to all the game systems you have in Army Builder. This is in contrast to the changes you can make in the View window outlined last month, which all apply only to the game system you've loaded. If you're not certain what any of the options are, you can click the "Help" button for a full description of each option. As with the other customization functions provided, you can always use the "Reset" button if you want to revert back to the default output settings.
The next button on the Print Preview window, the "Aa" button, opens the Output Font Configuration window.
From this window, you have complete control over how your roster prints. If you're tired of the same old Arial font for your Unit Names, simply double-click the font name associated with Unit Names. That will open up another window, the Font window, from which you can select your desired font. While you've got the Font window open, you can also change the color of the text, the size of the text, add effects, or change the font style. Any changes you make will be reflected on the Output Font Configuration window. You can also change text size or add bold or italics style directly on the Output Font Configuration window. If you don't like how things are coming together as you make your adjustments, you can always click the "Reset Fonts" button to revert to the default settings.
The last button on the Print Preview window, the printer with the "i" in the blue circle, opens the window for Print Setup. If you want, you can change paper size or print orientation from this window. The coolest option is the Print Watermark option, which allows you to customize your printouts by placing a background image behind your roster, such as a clan symbol or force emblem.
To use a watermark, you must first check the "Use Watermark" checkbox. Once enabled, you can use the "Browse" button to select the file to use for the watermark image and optionally check the "Stretch to Full Page" checkbox to have Army Builder expand the watermark to cover the entire page. The watermark image must be a standard Windows BMP file, and Army Builder assumes the bitmap is provided at 300dpi resolution for scaling purposes.
Here's a look at how something might appear after you've finished your adjustments:
That's it! You're now ready to print your stunning new roster. Good luck in your next battle!
