– January 2013 –
Welcome to another edition of our newsletter. We hope everyone's year is off to a great start! There is certainly a lot of activity in the Wolf Lair this month, especially with the launch of our Kickstarter for Realm Works. We're pleased to be able to share the following updates with you:
The Realm Works Kickstarter is off to a great start! In just nine days, we've already garnered over 500 backers and we're more than 40% of the way towards our goal! We truly appreciate everyone's support and we've been lining up some great perks that we'll be unveiling in the weeks to come.
We still have a lot of ground to cover before the Kickstarter ends, and we need your help spreading the word about Realm Works far and wide. To assist with this, we've put together some graphics that we encourage you to post on your blogs, websites, Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, and anywhere else that you think will boost our exposure in a positive way. You can find the graphics on our web site.
If you frequent RPG forums and chat rooms across the internet, please let others know about this Kickstarter and encourage them to come see what we're creating. And if there are specific resources we can provide that will make it easier to help with spreading the word, please send us a message to let us know. We'd love to hear from you.
Check out the updated Realm Works website for some new material! You can also gain some insight into our vision for the cloud and community repository from this interview on the d6 Generation podcast with our own Colen McAlister. The interview starts at around the 2:05 mark and is a great way to get some additional information on Realm Works.
Stay tuned for more updates, including details on some of the extra rewards we've been finalizing to make the Kickstarter even better for backers. Thanks again for your support and for helping us spread the word!
We're in the home stretch of our efforts for Hero Lab on the iPad! The vast majority of the work is behind us, and we'll be wrapping up the remaining portions over the coming weeks.
As we've shared in the past, the first phase of the iPad application will be an in-play character sheet for Pathfinder, and the functionality will expand from there. This in-play viewer will be provided as a free download when we launch Hero Lab on the iPad. Even after we expand the functionality in the iPad version, the free in-play viewer will remain an option for those of you who simply want to be able to use the iPad at the table and continue to manage your character on your primary computer. So, with this option, you'll be able to use your iPad as an electronic character sheet at no extra cost!
In anticipation of the release, we're highlighting another aspect of the upcoming application. In the past, we've focused on the main screen of Hero Lab on the iPad. This month, we're drilling into the UI and showing what you'll see when you're adding something like a custom magic weapon to your character.
Now for the news you've all been waiting to hear. Our current timeline indicates we'll be submitting Hero Lab for the iPad for App Store approval in March. If all goes as we hope and we receive approval, Hero Lab on the iPad will be available before the end of March! We'll keep you posted as we navigate through the submission and approval process.
At the end of January, we also released a new version of Hero Lab! This release addresses a number of bugs that surfaced for both Windows and Mac users. You'll also find some neat new features, such as the ability to copy an HTML statblock into an external program (such as a word processor) without losing text styles or formatting. You can find complete release notes in the readme file after you've downloaded the update.
Everyone with the Pathfinder game system in Hero Lab received a free update at the end of January with the player content from the newest Adventure Path. The final chapter in the "Shattered Star" series, "The Dead Heart of Xin" represents the culmination of efforts to reassemble the seven shards into the legendary Sihedron itself! It's been over ten thousand years since it was whole, and surprises await after all that time. We wish you luck overcoming the terrible danger facing Magnimar in this final chapter.
The free update also included our first installment of NPCs from the NPC Codex. You can use them as is or customize them to fit your needs. You'll find all the core classes except for the wizard, as well as two of the prestige classes in the release. We'll release another free set of the NPCs in next month's update as well.
Additionally, this update delivers some great improvements, especially if you play spellcasters. We've made some modifications and expect Hero Lab will evaluate your spellcasting characters from 25% to 50% faster! The more complex your portfolios, the more improvement you'll see. Along with some bug fixes, there's something for everyone as you'll see in the release notes.
If you've been looking for some new challenges, be sure to check out the information below about "The Tome of Horrors Complete", a new Hero Lab offering from Frog God Games. Compatible with Pathfinder, there are over 700 new monsters you can have at your disposal.
Finally, we added new material to two of our existing add-on packages. The Golarion #4 Player Companion add-on now includes "People of the North". You'll find "Irrisen – Land of Eternal Winter" in our Campaign Setting #9 add-on. Geared around the frozen forests and icy tundra of the Inner Sea region's northernmost nations, you'll find plenty of great character resources. Whether it's cold-weather adventuring gear, new magic items, northern warrior-oriented feats, or new foes to fight, everything you need to adventure in this land cloaked in unceasing winter for 1,400 years can be found in these two add-ons. Each add-on is on sale for $4.99. As always, if you've already purchased either add-on package, the new material has been added to your license as a free update.
We've got some great things in store for February as well! In addition to releasing new material from Paizo, our monster creator will be finalized. This enhancement will allow you to create custom monsters using the guidelines in the back of the Bestiary, without having to use the editor!
In mid-January, we released a number of updates for Shadowrun. We held the release a week longer than originally planned, which allowed us to pack more material into the updates we delivered.
Three additional chapters from "Runner's Black Book 2074" are now part of our Shadowrun PDF #3 bundle. Eurowars Antiques, MilSpec Tech 2 and Used Car Lot have been incorporated into the package, joining "Magical Societies" and other chapters from "Runner's Black Book 2074". This bundle can be purchased for $9.99. If you already bought the bundle, the new material was added to your license as a free update.
"Parazoology" joined a number of other books in our PDF #1 Bundle as well. Within this bundle, which is also on sale for $9.99, you'll find "Digital Grimoire", "MilSpec Tech", "This Old Drone", and "Way of the Adept". "Parazoology" marks the last book for PDF Bundle #1, and was added to the license of anyone who had already purchased the package.
We also wrapped up "Hazard Pay" this month with the release of the NPCs from that book. Finally, we released a number of enhancements as well as some bug fixes in our update. You can find the complete details of the updates on our forum. In February, we plan to release "Running Wild" as a new add-on package for Shadowrun. This detailed overview of animals, non-metahuman entities, and spirits will be sold for $9.99 when we release it.
This month, we're happy to report that additional Savage Settings have been released for Hero Lab! "Deadlands Noir" and "Tour of Darkness" represent the fifth and sixth free Settings now available directly from the Updates window. Just click the "Find Updates" button from the "Select a Game" window, locate the Savage Setting you want in the list, and download it! Once you've installed it, you'll be notified of any future updates. New titles will appear in the list periodically, so check back now and then to see if your favorite is among them. In the very near future, we expect to include "Pirates of the Spanish Main" and "50 Fathoms"!
We released an update for Savage Worlds for all owners of that game system in Hero Lab. The update addresses some issues in the core game system file, as well as in each of the Player Companions. You can find a list of the issues that have been addressed on our forum.
At the end of January, we released "The Tome of Horrors Complete" from Frog God Games as an add-on package for Hero Lab. This is a must-have accessory for all you Pathfinder players out there. You'll find this highly rated compendium of over 700 new monsters updated for Pathfinder on sale directly through Hero Lab for $29.99. Within the add-on, you'll find an incredible array of challenges awaiting any heroes brave enough (or foolish enough) to face them.
Each monster from the Tome has been re-created in Hero Lab, complete with artwork from the book! You can use them as they appear, or modify them to suit your needs. With the material in Hero Lab, it's readily exportable to your favorite virtual tabletop software like d20Pro as well. Note that you'll need the complete Bestiary bundle to make full use of the template-based stock heroes provided, as many templates use creatures from those sources as the base for the template.
If you're a fan of sci-fi roleplaying, you're probably familiar with Alternity. Even though publication of this game ceased in 2000, it still retains an incredibly loyal and devoted fan base. One of those fans has used the Authoring Kit in Hero Lab to create a game system file to support the game, and is sharing that work with his fellow fans.
We'd like to express our thanks to Jon Goranson (aka "evildmguy" on the forums) for creating the data file and sharing it. An early version of the game's data file is available for download through the Update window in Hero Lab. Anyone with the Authoring Kit/Savage Worlds/4e game system in Hero Lab will be able to use the Alternity game system; there is no additional charge for the Alternity file itself.
The files are still in development, and will continue to evolve. At this point, you can create a fully formed PL5 character for the game. The early version also focuses on the mechanics of the game, so there is not a significant amount of detail in the descriptions. However, updating some of this, as well as covering the entirety of the material in the Player's Handbook, is part of Jon's plan for the evolution of the game system's data file. He also plans to incorporate other sourcebook material, such as what's found in Dark*Matter, over time.
We've also established a forum on our web site for Alternity, which you can find here. Good luck in your upcoming adventures!
In our last newsletter, we shared a cool Kickstarter with you, focused on plunder and peril in the dungeon home of a trickster god!
There are less than two weeks left! The Kickstarter for the Grande Temple of Jing is still going strong! Stretch goals have increased the size of the book and allowed more celebrity contributors to be added. The roster now includes: Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook, Skip Williams, Matt Mayfield, Jim Ward, and Dave Gross. And then there's Chris Pramas, Larry Wilhelm, and Grimtooth the Troll, should the next stretch goal be met. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do!
The Grande Temple of Jing is a megadungeon designed for the Pathfinder roleplaying system. The adventure is set in a nearly infinite dungeon and is for characters level 1-20 (with some epic content as well). It's levels are modular, and GMs can rearrange them or add their own content easily. Special mechanics ensure that GMs are free to run the game the way they prefer, and that players are free to explore, have fun, and take risks – just like adventurers should.
The story: Jing is the god of mischief and pranks, beggars and thieves, fortune and misfortune. He has played tricks on kings and gods alike, taking from them their most valued possessions and hiding them in his home. Jing invites anyone to visit him, to explore his home, and take away whatever treasures they can carry. The trick? They have to find their way out.
This month, we're happy to report that yet another new publisher has released material using Hero Lab! There are also some new releases from folks we've highlighted in the past that we wanted to share as well.
