–  June 2011  –

Summer has now come, and that means convention season! We've recently returned from an incredibly successful PaizoCon and we're hip deep in getting ready for Gen Con, where we'll be showcasing a number of updates and new products. This month in the newsleetter we discuss:

Mac Version of Hero Lab

Work on the Mac Version of Hero Lab continues. At PaizoCon this month, we showed off an early Alpha version of Hero Lab for the Mac to the attendees. We're now happy to share that first look with you, our newsletter subscribers!

As you can see, Hero Lab for the Mac will look a lot like Hero Lab for Windows - we're going to try and keep the interface as similar as possible. If you're familiar with how the Windows version works, the Mac version will be very familiar to you.

Please note that Hero Lab for the Mac is still heavily under development, and isn't ready for beta testing yet. We'll be making an official announcement about how the licensing will work around Gen Con this year, and we're anticipating a release sometime around the Fall.

Realm Works Unveiling At Gen Con

Only a select few ever glimpsed the early prototype of Realm Works, our innovative new tool that facilitates campaign creation, evolution, and story development. This year at GenCon, we'll preview the upcoming full product for the first time. This is your chance to see all the ways Realm Works can enhance your game.

Realm Works provides an array of intuitive visualization tools that let GMs organize key story elements and events, streamline game session preparation, and easily share created content with their players. Accomplish more, spend less time on bookkeeping, and spend more time actually playing. Stop by booth 1725 and discover Realm Works for yourself!

Gen Con Seminars

We'll have more details next month, but drop by and see us at Gen Con in early August - we'll be publicly previewing our upcoming product Realm Works for the first time in booth 1725. We're also running four seminars at Gen Con this year:

  • Friday, 1pm-2pm: Army Builder - What's New (Westin : Council): If you're not familiar with Army Builder, or you want a closer look at the cool stuff we added in the recent Army Builder 3.3 update, this seminar will have lots of useful information for you.
  • Friday, 4pm-5pm: Realm Works - A Closer Look (Westin : Chamber): An indepth walk-through of Lone Wolf Development's revolutionary new product for RPG world development and collaboration between players and GMs. Discover how you can leverage Realm Works for your own games and what we have planned for the product's future.
  • Saturday, 2pm-3pm: Hero Lab - A Closer Look (Westin : Chamber): An in-depth walk-through of Lone Wolf Development's ENnies Award winning character management tool for a wide range of RPGs. Discover how to harness Hero Lab's wealth of capabilities for your own games. NOTE: This seminar is for beginning users of Hero Lab - for advanced users interested in creating content, please check out the following seminar on Sunday as well / instead.
  • Sunday, 1pm-2pm: Hero Lab - Adding Your Own Content (Westin : Chamber): The Hero Lab character management tool provides extensive capabilities for adding your own custom material to existing game systems. This tutorial delves into how you can readily integrate your own content with official game content. NOTE: This seminar is for users of Hero Lab who are interested in adding content using the editor - beginners interested in a general Hero Lab walk through should check out the seminar on Saturday as well / instead.

Upcoming Pathfinder Releases

In early July we'll be adding Words of Power and the remaining missing Ultimate Magic content as a free update for existing Ultimate Magic users. You can add the Ultimate Magic package to your license for $9.99 by choosing "Purchase Data Packages" from the Hero Lab license menu. Anyone who purchases now will, of course, get the missing UM content as a free update when it's released.

We'll also be adding the Rival Guide and Undead Revisited to the "Campaign Setting #5" package, and "Humans of Golarion" to the "Player Companion Races #2" package. These updates should all hit sometime in the first half of July.

Ultimate Combat News

Regarding the upcoming July Pathfinder releases: We've only just received a preview version of Ultimate Combat from Paizo, so we're trying to get that book entered into Hero Lab in time for Gen Con. However, due to the volume of new material and the short timeframe left before the show, we're not sure if the package will be ready for release in time. We're doing our best, and will post an update on the Ultimate Combat situation in next month's letter.

We also haven't received the other Pathfinder releases for July (Faiths of Balance and the Pathfinder Society Field Guide, among several others) yet, so those books will likely not make it into Hero Lab before Gen Con. They'll be one of our priorities once we get back from the show.

June Shadowrun Updates

We continue to be on track for a Gen Con release of the Shadowrun data sets for Hero Lab. This month we showcase what the actual characters sheets look like, with both the Combat Mage and Weapon Specialist. Click on the images below to see the sheets in all of their glory (PDF format).

Hero Lab 3.7a Releasing Soon

We'll be releasing version 3.7a of Hero Lab in the near future. This update includes some improvements to Hero Lab 3.7's custom output support, as well as a few bug fixes, so make sure to grab it when it arrives.

If you haven't updated to Hero Lab 3.7 yet, what are you waiting for? Version 3.7 of Hero Lab added a variety of highly requested features, including:

  • Customizable output: By writing an XSLT file, you can generate totally customizable game-specific output for your heroes. Now you can work on that custom character sheet that you've always wanted!
  • Output multiple heroes: As well as just outputting the current hero, you can print or generate statblocks for all heroes in the portfolio at once. This is ideal for GMs running encounters, or players who have sidekicks, companions or familiars.
  • Scrollable tabs: Running Hero lab on a netbook or laptop is easier than ever before, with new scrollable tabs - instead of trying to squeeze more and more information into the same tiny space, tabs will now scroll when necessary.
  • The ability to track third-party updates you have installed, and their versions, with Hero Lab's improved updates mechanism. Hero Lab 3.7 allows you to add multiple secondary update sources, and now includes improved tracking of which third-party updates you have installed, allowing you to install new versions and remove old updates more easily.

And more!
