Welcome to another edition of our newsletter! It's been another busy month here in the Wolf Lair, and we've done quite a bit since our last update. We've overcome our self-induced food comas, thrown some dice, avoided the shopping malls, and been amazed that some folks are so organized that they've already put up Christmas decorations! Admittedly, our decorations are in place, but only because we never took them down last year, so it doesn't really count as being organized (at least, that's what the she-wolves tell us). On top of all that, we've cranked out some new updates, which you can read all about in the sections below:
We continue to make great progress on the initial version of Hero Lab for the iPad. Over the past few months, we've shared updates with you related to how the iPad is coming together and what you'll see on the screen when it's released. This month, we wanted to provide some details around the iPad version's licensing.
As we mentioned previously, the first phase of the iPad application will be an in-play character sheet for Pathfinder, and the functionality will expand from there. This in-play viewer will be provided as a free download when we launch Hero Lab on the iPad. Even after we expand the functionality in the iPad version, this free in-play viewer will remain an option for those of you who simply want to be able to use the iPad at the table and continue to manage your character on your primary computer. So, with this option, you'll be able to use your iPad as an electronic character sheet at no extra cost!
Once we've expanded the functionality on the iPad beyond the in-play character sheet, we'll offer the full version of Hero Lab for the iPad in addition to the in-play viewer for download. Initially, the full version will support Pathfinder, as we've previously described. For existing Hero Lab licensees, there will be no additional fee specific to the use of the fully functional iPad version of Hero Lab. When the iPad version introduces support for your game(s) of choice, you'll be able to use Hero Lab on the iPad by simply allocating one of your license codes, reflecting your ownership of that game system through Hero Lab. Any content that you've purchased for your existing license will not need to be bought again; the use of the license code on the iPad will ensure that any content you've purchased is accessible on this device as well. Since you can't use the same license code on different devices, you'll have a license code for your desktop/laptop, and you'll use a separate license for your iPad.
Remember, each copy of Hero Lab includes one additional, free license code, so your initial purchase enables the use of two devices, like your desktop and your iPad. You can also obtain additional licenses for Hero Lab to run on even more devices that you own. Each additional license beyond the first two costs only $10, granting full access to all the content you've purchased. So, you can place your first two licenses on a desktop and an iPad, for example, and then also run Hero Lab on your laptop or your work computer simply by obtaining an additional license for the third device.
As tablets continue to become more popular, we expect a lot of people will continue to see the number of computing devices they own grow. Because of that, when we release Hero Lab for the iPad, we're going to increase the number of additional, secondary licenses you can obtain at the price of a mere $10 per license. Today, in addition to the primary license you have, you can have three secondary licenses (one of which is provided at no cost). Once the iPad version launches, you'll be able to obtain an additional secondary license at the $10 price. So, you'll be able to run your copy of Hero Lab on up to five devices you own.
As we mentioned last month, we've been mapping out the changes to our web site necessary to better illustrate the capabilities of Realm Works. Our goal with the changes is to give everyone a glimpse into what you can expect when Realm Works is released.
We're going to introduce the new material incrementally, and the first set of information will be in place by the end of the day on Saturday. You can find all the new information here on our web site. We expect all the new material will be in place within the next few weeks, so check back periodically for updates!
Right after the Thanksgiving holiday, we released new material for Pathfinder. Everyone with the Pathfinder game system received the player content from the most recent Adventure Path, "Beyond the Doomsday Door", as a free update. This is the fourth in the "Shattered Star" series, and finds your heroes taking their search to a ruined monastery. Can they brave the savage beasts and the unknown terror dwelling within the ruined levels of the monastery as they attempt to recover another piece of the Shattered Star?
Black Friday also marked the release of our add-on to support "Inner Sea Bestiary". This book's material has been added to our Campaign Setting #9 add-on package, which already includes "Artifacts and Legends". Get the content from these two books for only $4.99. Over the coming months, we expect to add the content from at least one more book to this Setting add-on. As always, if you buy this package before we've added the last book, you'll get the additional content as a free update when it's released.
Some additional enhancements have been incorporated into our most recent release. The Magical Lineage Trait has been implemented in this newest version, and now correctly applies its bonus to spells with metamagic powers. Also, the Vanities from the "Faction Guide" are now included for everyone with the Campaign Setting #4 package. You'll also find a large number of bugs that have been squashed in this release! You can find a complete list of changes in the FAQ, or here on our forum.
We've introduced some options related to how you can print any situational modifiers on your character sheet as a reminder of the additional bonuses to skills your character receives in certain situations. For example, if you're a Ranger, you have situational modifiers against your favored enemy. In the latest release, you can now print the situational modifier along with the item(s) to which they apply, or you can have all the situational modifiers in a comprehensive list at the end of your character sheet. You can also enable both options at the same time, or use neither of the options. To modify the print setting for the situational modifiers on your existing characters, open the Configure Hero window and scroll to the very bottom of the Hero Settings options on the right-hand side of the window. You'll find these settings in the list under the heading "Situational Modifiers on the Printout".
Finally, we wanted to remind everyone that the contents of the NPC Codex will be provided for free to everyone with the Pathfinder game system. We've started the coding of all the NPCs, and will keep you posted as to their availability. We received an overwhelming response to our call for help last month, and some of the folks that responded are cranking out the NPCs. We were amazed by how many of you responded with a desire to help us out, and wanted to say "Thank You" again to everyone for their support.
We've made some progress on our Shadowrun expansion plans, and wanted to provide some insight into what's coming up for all the 'runners in the audience. The release of "Hazard Pay" is imminent, and should be released before the end of this weekend, potentially as soon as Friday evening. The current version doesn't include the stock portfolios for the NPCs yet, but that material will be added in December. "Hazard Pay" is part of the Shadowrun Sourcebook Bundle #2 package, currently on sale for $9.99. "Hazard Pay" joins "Spy Games" and "State of the Art 2073" in this package. If you've already purchased this add-on, the new content will be added to your license when it's released.
Last month, we released "Nightfire Presents", one of the chapters from "Runner's Black Book 2074", as new material in our Shadowrun PDF Bundle #3 add-on. We'll be releasing the remaining chapters over the next couple months. In December, we expect to release the chapters for "Used Car Lot" and "Eurowar Antiques". At that point, we'll close out the remaining chapters of "Runner's Black Book 2074" and turn our attention to "Parazoology", "Running Wild" and "Shadowrun 2050". We'll provide updates on release dates for these books as soon as we can.
This month, we wanted to draw your attention to some new data files for Army Builder. As you know, all the game system data files for Army Builder are built and maintained by fans of the various games. It is a strictly volunteer effort on their part. Before we highlight the new stuff, we wanted to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the folks who are willing to share what they've built with the rest of the community. So, a hearty "Thank You" to everyone involved!
In terms of new game systems for Army Builder, the team at The Black Ocean have built data files for the Star Wars X-wing miniatures game from Fantasy Flight Games! The data files are not the final, fully tested versions, and therefore are provided in a beta release state, which you can obtain through the Update window in Army Builder, or directly from The Black Ocean web site.
There's also been a great deal of interest expressed on our forums in Bolt Action from Warlord Games. We're happy to report that we've been in touch with a member of the Army Builder community who is in the process of creating a data file for Bolt Action. He's fairly well along in the construction, and we expect the data file will be released sometime in the next few weeks. If you love the beautiful models Warlord Games is producing, keep your eyes on the Army Builder Update window and download this data file when it's available!
This month, we've got some great new product releases from publishers that have used Hero Lab. We're also happy to introduce yet another publisher who has joined the ranks of those producing material for Hero Lab – Frog God Games! Their first release is an awesome set of material that you need to check out.
"Rappan Athuk", the legendary mega-dungeon, is now available as an add-on package for Hero Lab from Frog God Games. Updated for Pathfinder, you will find this dungeon to be unparalleled in its ability to strike fear into the hearts of the most stalwart adventurers. Join the vast legions that have combed these nasty halls in search of fame and fortune, and see if you can best one of the best known dungeon locations in gaming. Even players who have never entered its halls know that warning cry of "Don't go down the Well!" C'mon, you can do it; how bad can it be? You can find the Hero Lab file for purchase on Frog God's web site.
In creating "Rappan Athuk", the fine folks at Frog God have strived to produce the best adventure possible rather than a generic, cookie-cutter type dungeon. To that end, "Rappan Athuk" takes advantage of a wide range of Pathfinder capabilities, so you'll need to have the add-ons for Bestiary 1, 2, and 3, as well as the APG, "Ultimate Combat", and "Ultimate Magic" for the "Rappan Athuk" file to work. Finally, if you purchase this data set from Frog God Games, you'll be able to easily export anything you need to the d20Pro virtual tabletop!
We're back this month with another installment of "Did You Know...?", our overview of various functionality that may have escaped your notice so far. Remember, you can help us spread the word by sending your ideas on things we should cover in this section by e-mailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org. This month, we're going to focus on a tip for Hero Lab that will work with Pathfinder or d20, and which will give you some great control over the Classes you're selecting for your characters.
As you're working through the creation of a character, it isn't uncommon to change your mind about how you want things to look when you're finished. Among the examples where this might come into play:
The key behind these or other examples is that you've created a character or NPC, but decide you want to alter the order of the Classes in some manner. While you can delete the Classes you've set up, and then construct them again, there is a much simpler way to do this in Hero Lab. While we're using Pathfinder in the example, this works the same way for d20.
To move Classes or templates, simply right-click on the particular item you want to change. In the below example, we're going to move the Werewolf template. When you right-click on the Werewolf line in the Classes and Templates list, a pop-up window will appear.
Simply select the option you want from the available choices on moving the class selected. For this example, once you select "Move To Bottom" your Classes and Templates list will update.
We hope you find this tip useful, and look forward to hearing from you about what other tips you think we should highlight in the future.
