Hero Lab Enhancements for D&D 5th Edition SRD – Encounter Builder, More Monsters, and Community Pack Updates!
Another wave of new resources is here for D&D players. Create complex encounters with ease using Hero Lab’s integrated Encounter Builder – available now in the latest update for the D&D 5th Edition SRD. Choose between over 200 monsters from the SRD, from cuddly, ferocious Owlbears to devious goblins. Everything you need to create compelling encounters awaits – simply pick the monsters to drop in! This invaluable tool makes it easier than ever to prepare for your next game.
Hero Lab makes it a breeze to build 5th Edition encounters. Simply select the challenge rating (CR), and choose from hundreds of pre-built monsters to add to the combat. Hero Lab tracks your encounter’s current CR as you add adversaries, plus the remaining XP to reach your target.
DMs looking for inspiration can search the 200+ monsters by keyword, or limit the search using the CR. For example, if you want your players to face an elemental creature of some kind, search for monsters with the keyword “elemental” and in the desired CR range. Just like that, you have a tailored list of monsters to choose from!
Create Custom NPCs
Build NPCs using the hundreds of monsters now available! Simply mark a new character as an NPC on the “Configure Hero” form, and gain access to NPC races like the Djinni and Centaur. Just like building a player character, you can fully customize the NPC to fit your game. Give them armor, gear, and even class levels. Whatever challenges your players may face – Hero Lab has you covered!
D&D 5th Edition SRD Community Pack
In case you missed the news, the Hero Lab user community recently released the D&D 5E Community Pack, and it’s free! One of the community members involved in the project wanted to share some info about the Community Pack, including their latest updates:
The Community Pack is a collection of character options designed to fill the gaps left by the SRD while also expanding with options from popular third party and home-brew content. The most exciting recent update is the addition of the leftover monsters from the Monster Manual, allowing DM’s to quickly and efficiently generate encounters. We have added many options from official source books and adventures and are currently working to complete the mechanics of those things while also working to add some of the popular 3rd party content such as Matt Mercer’s Gunslinger Martial Archetype for Fighters.
I would like to give a special thanks to ShadowChemosh whose scripting and technical knowledge of Hero Labs has been nothing short of incredible. Not to mention he’s hosting the files! And Panda who slaved day and night to configure the additional monsters. It’s been a real team effort to bring the pack together and a really interesting and fulfilling experience seeing the community come together so efficiently.

A huge thanks to daplunk and the other community members that worked on the Community Pack for making the additional options available to Hero Lab users!

Updating the Hero Lab website has been long overdue. Other, more urgent efforts kept preempting the website overhaul, but no more! It’s finally time to bring the site into the 21st century – and you can be a force in that change!
We need someone like you to bring this project to completion, by revamping the substance of the Hero Lab website. We’ve already mapped out a full redesign of the site’s look and feel – now we just need you to put the meat on the bones, by developing the material for the site and driving this project across the finish line.
You’ll convey the essence of Hero Lab to fellow gamers in a passionate, succinct and engaging way. When you’re done, you’ll have crafted roughly 8,000 words of content.
If you think you’re the ideal fit for this project, please email the following materials to email@example.com, specifying a subject line of “Website Writer Wanted”:
- Summary of why you’re a great fit for this project
- 1 or more writing sample(s) – ideal writing samples include copywriting for websites, newsletters, or other marketing materials (if you don’t have such work, you’re welcome to create something for us to demonstrate your skills!)
- Availability to start in late-April to mid-May and complete the project within 4-6 weeks, including feedback and edits. If you have limits to your availability during that time, please indicate that in your email.
- Resume or CV is welcome but not required
We’ll be making our selections in mid-April, so please e-mail us as soon as possible, and no later than Monday, April 18th.
