Hello everyone! As you prepare for the trick-or-treaters or your upcoming holiday plans, we’ve been working hard to bring you some new treats ourselves! It may not be a handful of candy or a perfectly roasted turkey, but we still think we have some pretty cool stuff this month – not to mention this newsletter. Not only have we tweaked it to be a little sleeker, but it now mobile friendly! Check out some of the other updates below:


Realm Works Releasing to Kickstarter Backers

October has been an incredibly busy month for the Realm Works team – one filled with both anticipation and difficult hurdles. We’re happy to announce that all eligible Kickstarter backers should be receiving their copy of Realm Works by the end of next week! Backers can learn more information about this release in the most recent Developer’s Journal entry on Kickstarter.

Realm Works won’t be 100% ready for launch when the Kickstarter backers receive access and, consequently, won’t yet be available to the public. So why the continued delays? When it’s released, we want to make sure that Realm Works is a quality product. Quality within a piece of software doesn’t just mean bug-free; quality to us means that Realm Works will be easy to use and adapts to each GM’s wants.

A common question we’ve been hearing recently is, “isn’t that what patches and updates are for?” We believe this question comes out of a misconception that Realm Works is ready for release and we’re just adding additional features and functionality not necessary for initial sale. This is not the case. Unlike other companies, we believe our customers deserve a quality product upon purchase – software with all of the features and usability enhancements necessary for the initial public release.

We’re still working to get the cloud syncing logic fully operational, which is a key part of the product. We’re also auditing the code in detail and double-checking that everything is bullet-proof. This process has uncovered some issues that we’ve been fixing to ensure that everyone’s data is safe and secure. While it added additional time onto the release schedule, it’s better to find issues now before it’s widely released– both because it saves new users from these problems and reduces the amount of work we have to do to fix them. Fixing problems after thousands of people are using the product, plus potentially needing to fix their data, is lots more work.

We realize these delays are frustrating to everyone – please know that they are incredibly frustrating for us too. The thing to remember is that, if this was easy, somebody else would have done it long ago. Realm Works continues to get better with each passing week, and we’re happy to be in the home stretch. It is a complex beast that we have tackled, and we’ve got it 97% tamed.

As we continue prepping Realm Works for the v1.0 launch, you’ll see some exciting news updates over the next month. The first one will be a redesigned website in November, which will have the latest information on Realm Works and be easier to navigate and explore. Additionally, you will see tutorial videos released this month, along with a Best Practices document and a Realm Works user guide. While these are no substitute to the software itself, we hope they tide you over during these final weeks before release.

We’re in the home stretch and our Kickstarter backers will get their hands on the product shortly. For those of you waiting for the public release, we appreciate your continued support and patience as we continue to tame the beast that is Realm Works. Army Builder Roster Viewer App for iPhone and iPad!

This month has been an exciting one for Army Builder users! The Army Builder Roster Viewer app is now available for iPad® and iPhone®. This free app provides you with multiple views of your roster, including a standard print-style list, a “card view” with individual cards for each unit, a mobile view optimized for use on the iPhone, and a simple tournament summary or model list.

We’ve also integrated the app with Dropbox to make it as easy as possible to view your rosters. Instead of emailing yourself a PDF or transferring files via iTunes, simply save your rosters to Dropbox and have them instantly appear on your iPhone or iPad! Linking your free Dropbox account to the Roster Viewer lets your iPhone or iPad immediately see the list of rosters you’ve saved.

Please note that this app only allows you to view previously saved rosters, and does not let you create or edit rosters on your iPad or iPhone. Additionally, the newest version of Army Builder (v3.4c) is required to use this app. For more information or to purchase the Army Builder Roster Viewer, check out the app available now on iTunes! Army Builder Volunteer Contributors

As well as the Roster Viewer, we’ve also had many updates for Army Builder data files come out this month! Dystopian Wars, Hordes, Mordheim, and Warhammer 40,000 (6th Edition) all had updates released in October, thanks to their volunteer data file authors.

Did you know that all game system data files are created by members of the Army Builder community? All of your favorite game systems are created by people just like you, who build the data files in their spare time and simply for the love of the game.

Many Army Builder users ask why it can take a while for new data file updates to arrive. It’s helpful to remember that the people creating these files do this on top of their normal job or school work. Not only does it take time to implement new updates, but it also takes time to test those updates for bugs. Additionally, Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy data files are especially complex, so data files for these updates can sometimes take 30 days or longer to release.

We’re incredibly thankful for these community members that take the time to not only code the data files, but also test, debug, and communicate with the Army Builder community. The next time your game system sees an update, consider sending them a “thank you” for all of their hard work.

Finally, many of our Army Builder users have been taking advantage of our new licensing system! As a reminder, licenses purchased after August 1st, 2012, or extended past August 1st, 2013 will no longer expire. This means you can continue to receive all future updates to Army Builder 3 without having to pay for any future license extensions. If you currently have an expired Army Builder license, you can extend your license and take advantage of this new system. Check out our website for more information! New Kids on the Block – Windows 8.1 and OS X Mavericks

We’re happy to announce that both Army Builder and Hero Lab support the newest Microsoft and Apple operating systems – Windows 8.1 and OS X Mavericks!

If you’re a Windows user, please be aware that some Windows 8.1 users have reported games and apps disappearing following an upgrade, especially for users upgrading from the Window 8.1 trial to the full version. This means that your games and software, including Hero Lab or Army Builder, may require license reactivation.

For license reactivation, if you’ve moved your license to a different computer within the past 120 days, your license reassignment will need to be authorized by our staff. We recommend you plan accordingly for this, as our support system can take up to 3 business days to process early license reassignment, although we do try to get to them as soon as we can.

Latest Pathfinder Releases

pathfinderYour deepest, darkest fears are here, and it’s time for you to do prepare for battle. Choose from over 300 different monsters or introduce new familiars with Bestiary 4 for Hero Lab. This new package is available now for $9.99, just in time for Halloween! These new monsters will make the ghouls and goblins tremble in terror. Creatures range from classic horror and film monsters, like Beowulf’s Grendel, to new constructs and Great Old Ones, such as Cthulhu. For players, you will have access to new player-friendly races like changlings, kitsune, and nagaji, as well as new familiars, animal companions, and other allies. Bestiary 4 will bring exciting new challenges to your gaming group, so prepare for an epic battle!

A new add-on for Pathfinder, “Blood of the Moon”, is joining “Mythic Origins” in our Player Companion #13 package, available now for only $4.99. Whether your character is a lycanthrope or another kind of were-animal, this add-on will provide you with new rules and information.

Manage your campaign’s kingdoms with ease, whether it’s through expanding their borders or engaging in diplomacy. The missing “Kingdoms” chapter from Ultimate Campaign is now added to our Ultimate Campaign package with this month’s updates. Looking to purchase Ultimate Campaign? It is available as a Pathfinder add-on package for $9.99.

Frog God Games is one of our publisher partners, and they have a lot of exciting projects this month to share with all of you! Not only do they have a shiny new website, they recently launched a wildly successful Kickstarter and are releasing some exciting new Pathfinder products. Did You Know? Statblock Outputs in Hero Lab

We’re back this month with our latest installment of “Did You Know…?”, our overview of awesome but lesser-known functionality within our products. Last month, we showed you how to output a character’s statblock within Hero Lab. This month, we’re going to take it a step farther.

This feature is perfect for Hero Lab users that want to quickly share multiple statblocks. Perhaps you have a blog and want to share some of your favorite NPCs’ statblocks, or want to get some feedback on your monsters in your favorite forum? This “How To” guide will walk you through the basics of how to output a whole batch of plain text statblocks all at once in Hero Lab. This function is available for all Hero Lab users!

Step 1: Create a folder for all the NPCs that you plan to create statblocks for. Make sure that the folder is easy to find, for example by putting it under “My Documents”. Because I plan these statblocks to be for a battle my characters will always remember, I have labeled my folder “Epic Battle of Doom”.

Step 2: Create your NPCs as you normally would in Hero Lab. As they’re created, save your NPCs to the special folder you created. If you’ve already built NPCs that you wish to output to statblocks, just copy and paste the files into the folder. Look at all of those adversaries for my players!

Step 3: Create a new folder for the text statblocks to be stored in. It isn’t necessary for you to create a new folder, but when Hero Lab begins converting all of your NPCs to statblocks, having them located in a separate folder may help you stay more organized. To make it simpler for me to find them in the future, I created a folder called “Epic Battle of Doom – Statblocks”.

Step 4: In Hero Lab, select the “Develop” menu and then click “Save Statblocks for Portfolios in Folder”.

Step 5: In the first “Choose Folder” pop-up, select the folder with the portfolios you would like convert to statblocks. In the second pop-up, select the folder you would like the statblocks sent to. Continue and the creation will begin!

Step 6: Enjoy your newly minted statblocks! Good luck killing – erm – battling your players!
