Christmas is quickly approaching, and the team has been pushing off their gift-wrapping and other holiday preparations to try to get the Realm Works Pre-Release out the door. While there has been some great progress made, the critical items needed were not all completed, and we’re sorry to report that the Pre-Release won’t be ready before Christmas.
Even though Realm Works is running well for our Kickstarter backers, there’s still some work to do before we can make the Pre-Release available to everyone. For details on when we now hope to deliver this release and a message from Rob, the lead Realm Works developer and company President, take a look at the rest of the update below.
As we described in our last update, there were several requirements we had to meet in order to put a pre-release version of Realm Works on sale this week. A critical one was ensuring that server syncing was going smoothly for the Beta team. There were also some smaller, but still important items that needed to be in place, plus a number of bugs that are still eluding us. All of these pieces need to be working smoothly before we could put Realm Works on sale to the public, and unfortunately that was too much for us to finish before Christmas.
Although not all of those requirements were met in time, the good news is that server syncing, the most complicated part of Realm Works remaining, has been progressing steadily with the Beta team! The majority of the bugs reported were handled quickly by our developers, thanks to fast and thorough reporting by Beta users. The Beta syncing release has progressed well enough, that we just rolled out syncing to all of our eligible Kickstarter backers.
We’ll have to reassess our release plan after the holidays. The remaining milestones will require the whole team working together to achieve them, and after the long hours they’ve been working for the last few months, almost everyone on the Realm Works team is taking some well-deserved vacation over the holidays. Because everyone will be taking different days off here and there, we won’t all be back working together as a team until after the New Year. Unfortunately, this means we won’t be able to plan any major releases until then.
A Vision 30 Years in the Making – A Message from Rob Bowes
Rob is the lead developer of Realm Works and President of Lone Wolf Development.
As we head into 2014, I wanted to reflect on the past year and the progress we’ve made thanks to the support of our fans, current users and our Kickstarter backers. 2013 has also held frustrations for those of you who have been waiting anxiously for Realm Works to release. We know the delays have left many of you frustrated, and believe me when I say that I understand.
It’s been my dream to build Realm Works for over 30 years, ever since I bought my first PC. It wasn’t until recently that the technology caught up with my vision, which is one of the reasons we built Army Builder and Hero Lab first. My own vision of Realm Works has grown and evolved during development, often through feedback from our Beta users and our supporters. And as we encountered new obstacles and delays, I was often reminded of why this has never been done before – it’s a complex and near-overwhelming undertaking.
Nonetheless, now that I see the light at the end of the tunnel (and it’s there, I swear), I can’t wait for all of you to be able to utilize Realm Works in your games. In the same way that many RPG players and GMs cannot imagine building a character without the aid of Hero Lab, Realm Works will help bring the tabletop roleplaying hobby into a new era.
Based on the excitement and feedback we’ve been getting from the Kickstarter backers who have been using Realm Works, we know you’ll find it to be worth the wait. Even so, we don’t take for granted the continued support we see from our users and fans – thank you for your patience and support!
We’re looking forward to what the New Year will bring for tabletop gaming, and we can’t wait to make Realm Works a big part of that!
