We’re hosting 6 events at Gen Con this year, and registration is now open! Not only is Live RPG Plus returning for an encore, we’re also diving deep into the tech landscape of D&D 5th edition, and hosting seminars that go into the nuts and bolts for both Hero Lab and Realm Works.
Greetings, Pathfinders! This month’s update brings 4 new books to Hero Lab, plus some additional changes to spellbooks for new characters. Read on to find out more!
Building on last month’s improvements, we’ve added additional spellbook capabilities in this month’s Pathfinder update. Spellbook-using characters like the Wizard are now prompted to add a spellbook, which holds the spells you gain as you level up, as well as any new ones you learn along the way.
Hero Lab automatically tracks the number of pages used by a spellbook, and will warn you if you try to exceed it. Not only that, we automatically calculate the cost of new spells scribed into the book, whether you’re buying a scroll to copy from or paying another spellcaster for access. No more sitting down with a calculator to figure out how much to pay the town’s wizard for that copy of Fireball – Hero Lab does it for you!
If you have an existing spellbook-using character, don’t worry – they’ll continue to work just like they did before, although you can transition to the new way of managing your spells via the Options button on the Spellbook form. (Once you do so, you’ll need to re-add spells to your spellbook, and delete the originals from the Spellbook form.)
Full spellbook support has been a longstanding request from many users, and we’re happy to have brought it to Hero Lab! Thanks especially to data file author Aaron for his work on this feature.
Magic Tactics Toolbox
Magic-using characters can now take advantage of dozens of new options from this book, including archetypes, feats, spells, and more! Make your Druid a poison specialist with the new Toxicologist archetype, allowing you to cast spells like Cloudkill and easily apply poison to weapons (and then, presumably, your opponents). Or for any character who enjoys being polymorphed, take the Scale and Skin feat to improve the effects of transmutation spells cast on you!
The Magic Tactics Toolbox is the first book in our new Player Companion #23 package, available today for only $4.99!
Learn more about criminal enterprises and join nefarious schools in Inner Sea Intrigue, the perfect addition to a sneaky character’s repertoire! Inquisitors can pick from the new Clandestine and Politics inquisitions to focus their powers on secrecy and learning about others’ goals, and over a dozen new rogue, investigator, and vigilante talents add new options for your characters.
Inner Sea Intrigue is the first book in our new Campaign Setting #16 package, available now for only $4.99!
Hell’s Vengeance #4: For Queen and Empire
The Glorious Reclamation continues its progress through Cheliax, claiming yet more territory, with zealous Iomedean knights pressing ever closer to the strongholds of House Thrune. Good will always triumph over evil, right? Not if the players of Hell’s Vengeance have anything to say about it!
The Hell’s Vengeance Adventure Path package is available for GMs now, for only $24.99! As usual, player content from this adventure path is included free with the update.
Produced by Legendary Games, the Mythic Spell Compendium brings you mythic versions of over 2000 spells for your Pathfinder campaign! This book is an encyclopedic tome of magic, a comprehensive compilation of mythic versions for EVERY spell in the Pathfinder core rules and MORE! These spells are not just an exercise in bigger numbers (though you’ll find those here as well), but bring new and exciting dynamic and even cinematic options to your spellcasting character, many with augmentable variations to expand their power to an even grander scale.
That’s All, Folks!

Another 5th edition update has arrived in Hero Lab! This release brings optional rules like Spell Points and additional ability scores, while DMs can enjoy templates and an updated monster builder.
We’ve had a lot of requests to add the Spell Points option to Hero Lab. Instead of giving a spellcaster a set of level-specific spell slots to use, this rules variant simply gives you a pool of points from which you can cast spells at will. We have good news for all you Spell Points fans – this option is now supported in Hero Lab! Select the Spell Points option on the Configure Hero form (or Character tab on the iPad), and your character will use the new rules. You can see a screenshot of the updated Spells tab to the right!
We’ve also added the option to use additional Honor and Sanity ability scores, plus Proficiency Dice for those of you who enjoy a little extra randomness, and some additional options too. Try them out and see what you think!
Custom Monsters & Templates
For DMs, we’ve been hard at work improving the custom monster creator. When you’re building a custom monster, the effective stats of the monster are now affected by factors like the number of resistances and immunities it has, allowing you to more accurately gauge its strength.
We’ve also added a number of standard abilities for you to use with your monster, allowing you to easily add traits like “Ambusher” and “Regeneration”, or add actions like “Change Shape” and “Breath Weapon”.
Finally, we’ve added a new Template table on the Race tab for NPCs, and the Half-Dragon template from the SRD is included for your use. Now it’s easier than ever to build your own monsters and NPCs in Hero Lab!
Check out the full list of changes, including bug fixes, in our 5th edition forum thread. That’s all for this month – we have another update scheduled for June with additional updates and improvements. Thanks for reading!
A bugfix update is now available for Shadowrun 5th edition! Mathias, our lead Shadowrun data file author, has addressed over two dozen bugs in this release, including fixes for deckers, riggers, adepts, street samurai, naga, centaurs, voodoo practitioners, and more!
Check out the full release notes on our forums, and be sure to grab the update before your next Shadowrun!
We’d like to pass along an important update for users of the Pathfinder Community Packs:
Greetings Hero Lab community! This is Tim Shadow (aka ShadowChemosh) and I run the Community Packs for Pathfinder. I am here again with another exciting announcement that will make it so much easier to make use of the community stuff.
If you’ve downloaded one of my Community Packs before, I have good news! The requirement for us to have multiple different Packs is a thing of the past. From now on you only need to download and install ONE pack that is simply named the “Pathfinder Pack“. This one Pack now contains all the data and features of the different individual Packs (GM, Mythic, 3PP, Basic, Unchained, and Modern).
If you don’t have a particular official license that is needed by a specific Pack then HL will give a nice warning message but the Pack will load without giving the errors that cause HL to go into safe mode. For example if you try and use a community archetype that gives spells from Ultimate Combat and feats from the Advanced Players Guide only the parts that you have a license for will actually appear on your character.
To convert from the old multiple Packs to the new single Pathfinder Pack you have to do two small manual steps. First is to delete/remove any existing community Packs from your computer or iPad. Here’s how:
On Windows or Mac:
- Go to the Tools menu and select the Manage Third Party Updates option.
- Delete any existing community packs that are listed there.
- On the “Select Portfolio” screen, press the “Updates” button at the bottom of the screen. The Updates screen will appear.
- At the bottom left of the Updates screen is a list labeled “Installed Updates” that contains all the Packages (official and community) you have installed. To remove the community packs, “LEFT SWIPE” on the Pack name until you see the “DELETE” button appear.
The final step on either platform is to just download the new “Pathfinder Pack” and let it install. Once that’s done, that’s it! You now have the new pack installed, which will be updated normally in future.
If you want to try out the Pathfinder Packs please see the HL Forum post “Pathfinder Community Packs” for full details on how to get started!
Thanks to the community, and especially to Tim Shadow, for providing these resources for everyone!
For all of our loyal Army Builder users, here are some of the updates that have been released this month. Thanks to Dom for compiling this list for us to include!
- Terminator Genisys – the T-72 Spider Dog and HK-8 Flying Drone are now available.
- Mordheim – Updates for the core rulebook have been made, and more warbands have been added.
- Bolt Action: Australians in the Pacific can now be used, plus bug fixes.
- Beyond the Gates of Antares: Various bug fixes have been made, plus changes for the new core rulebook.
That’s it for our June newsletter. Happy gaming, everyone!
