May Newsletter 2013

Time continues to fly by as yet another month comes to an end. Before you know it, summer will be here and, for us, that means convention season! As you can imagine, things are getting pretty exciting in the Wolf Lair and we have these updates to share with you:

Realm Works

We continue to achieve significant milestones towards the release of Realm Works. Chief among these are the strides we’re making related to the cloud service, syncing data and setting up our production servers. We’re excited about the user-interface enhancements that are coming together and expect the final key features slated for the upcoming Early Access release will be in place soon.

The work over the next few weeks will remain focused in these key areas as we prepare for the Early Access release. Over 600 of our Kickstarter Backers will be getting their hands on this release, which is now targeted for late June. Once the Early Access release is out, we’ll be zeroing in on the official release of Realm Works in August!

For details on exactly what’s going on within the development team, Kickstarter Backers are encouraged to check out Update #31, our latest Developer Journal available through Kickstarter. Additionally, we’ll continue to provide updates on our progress and the overall state of the release in upcoming newsletters.

Army Builder Roster Viewer for iPad and iPhone Coming Soon

We’ve got some great news for all you Army Builder users out there. We expect to release an initial version of the Army Builder Roster Viewer for the iPad and the iPhone before Gen Con!

This initial version will allow you to view your rosters on your iPad or iPhone during your game. You’ll still create your roster using your desktop or laptop version of Army Builder. We’ve decided to deliver this functionality and expand our support of the iPad to Army Builder much earlier than originally planned based on the overwhelmingly positive reception we’ve received about Hero Lab for the iPad.

We’ll also be introducing support for the use of Dropbox as part of delivering the Army Builder Roster Viewer. You’ll be able to create your army on your desktop or laptop, and then save it to Dropbox. When you launch the Army Builder Roster Viewer, you’ll be able to retrieve the roster you placed in Dropbox and view it on your iPad. Here’s a teaser to whet your appetite and hold you over until the release:

Army Builder Roster Viewer Preview

Initially, the Army Builder Roster Viewer will be a free application available through the App Store. Even after we expand the functionality and offer full roster creation within Army Builder for the iPad, this roster viewer app will remain a free option for those of you who simply want to have a more portable version of your army list. We do not yet have a timeline for introducing full roster creation capabilities to Army Builder for the iPad. However, once we do, we will share the information via the newsletter and Facebook.

Come See Us At PaizoCon

We’ll be joining many of you at PaizoCon in July! We’ve got a lot planned, including a preview of our upcoming Realms Works product, and hope to see you there.

First off, we’ll be running our popular Character Creation Station that will be available to any PaizoCon attendee. You can try out Hero Lab® by building a character for any events in which you’re participating! Even if you just want to make sure your character meets all the necessary requirements, feel free to stop by and check out Hero Lab. Existing Hero Lab users are also welcome to update their characters between games. Just look for the big Character Creation Station banner!

We’re also doing our part to thank some of the wonderful people helping to make PaizoCon great – the official PaizoCon GMs. Any GM running an official game at PaizoCon can pick up a free copy of Hero Lab from us during the weekend and discover how much simpler life can be! We know that many GMs have already adopted Hero Lab, and we want to recognize your support of PaizoCon as well. So, if you’re an official GM who already owns Hero Lab, you can stop by to claim a special “thank you” — you’ll get a free copy of our add-on for “Ultimate Campaign”! To claim your free license or add-on, all you have to do is stop by our Character Creation Stations during PaizoCon and present your badge to a member of our staff.

Finally, we’ll be running three seminars at PaizoCon. Two of the seminars will focus on Hero Lab and how to add your own content. Additionally, if you’ve been working with the Hero Lab Editor already, you can bring your “.user” files with you on a laptop or a flash drive for suggestions from the experts on overcoming any hurdles you’re facing!

The third seminar we’ll be running will be a preview of Realm Works, our revolutionary new product for RPG world development and collaboration between players and GMs. Among the highlights will be an introduction to Fog of World™, a unique ability to control exactly what you reveal to the players. See how you can streamline your game prep, readily access everything about your world, and enhance your entire gaming experience!

Stay tuned for more information on the free add-on giveaway for GMs, as well as for a schedule of our seminars. We wish you safe travels, and we’ll see you soon!

Pathfinder Updates

pathfinderOn Monday, we’ll be releasing an update for Pathfinder as well as some new add-ons. First up, the player content from “The Frozen Stars”, the latest installment in the Reign of Winter Adventure Path, will be included as a free update for everyone with the Pathfinder game system in Hero Lab. In this episode of the treacherous adventure, the heroes continue their search for Baba Yaga on Triaxus, the seventh world in Golarion’s solar system. Don’t let a little thing like a war on the planet discourage you in your quest!

We’re happy to announce that Monday’s release will include the final installment of NPCs from the NPC Codex, concluding our free release of this material. No matter what you might need for your adventure, you can likely find it among the more than 300 characters represented in this vast tome. As a special celebration of the final release of the content for Hero Lab, we will be including the art work from the NPC Codex as a free download!

Our Hero Lab add-on for “Ultimate Campaign” is also slated for release on Monday! This ambitious undertaking introduces great new concepts and ideas for players and GMs alike. Because of some of the underlying complexity, we’ve broken this project into two phases. In this first release, you’ll find the player related content, like new traits or feats. In the final release, you’ll find the ability to manage kingdoms and create settlements, buildings, rooms, and more. This add-on will be on sale for $9.99. As always, if you purchase the add-on before the final material has been added, you’ll receive the new content as a free update.

We’ll also be releasing our newest Campaign Setting add-on for Pathfinder on Monday. Within our Campaign Setting #10 add-on, you’ll find the material from two new books for Pathfinder, “Fey Revisited” and “Chronicle of the Righteous”. In “Fey Revisited”, you’ll find a wide array of legendary beings such as vigilant tree-bonded dryads, fanciful goat-legged satyrs, and blindingly beautiful nymphs. Just watch out for lurking evils like sadistic redcaps and diverse hordes of maniacal gremlins among these well-loved Fey creatures. “Chronicle of the Righteous” offers a host of options to expand your war against the blasphemous and the profane, including new spells and magic items to fight your evil counterparts. This add-on will be sold for $4.99, and we expect to add at least one more book to it. As always, if you purchase this add-on before we’ve added the last book, you’ll get that additional material as a free update when it’s released.

Last, but certainly not least, don’t forget that a new bundle, our Pathfinder Classic Bundle, goes on sale on July 1! We’re combining our existing Campaign Setting Bundle with our current Player Companion Bundle to create one big package of awesome material. The content from over 35 books will be packaged together and offered for the special introductory price of only $29.99! That’s a 25% discount compared to buying the two existing bundles separately, and a stunning 40% discount over the individual package prices.

We wish you good fortune in your upcoming adventures!

Spirit of the Century Released

“Spirit of the Century”, a complete, stand-alone pulp role-playing game based on Fate, is now available to all Hero Lab licensees as a free game system!

We released “Spirit of the Century” in the first part of May. All Hero Lab users can download and install the game system in preparation for a rollicking pulp-action adventure! With the implementation in the full version of Hero Lab, you’ll be able to use the Hero Lab Editor to customize additional content for your “Spirit of the Century” and Fate games. Before the end of next week, you’ll also find “Spirit of the Century” in the Hero Lab Starter Edition, our free version of the software that currently supports the Pathfinder Beginner Box.

We hope everyone enjoys the free release of Spirit of the Century!

Participate in this Intriguing RPG-Oriented Survey!

Do you play tabletop RPGs at least six hours a month? Are you over 18? Then be part of important research into the positive attitudes of gamers by completing an anonymous five-minute survey!

Greg Smith (a psychology grad student and gamer for 30+ years) is studying the positive effects of RPGs on general and social self-efficacy (the internal belief that one is capable of correctly dealing with a given situation). He proposes that RPGs, by virtue of being a social activity in which individuals achieve vicarious successes through game play, have the potential to increase self-efficacy. If you would like to participate in his study, from June 1st thru July 15th to fill out the anonymous five-minute survey regarding your self-efficacy, gaming habits, and demographics (age, employment, etc.)
